This is a painting of the 25th wedding anniversary of Josef Bruno Karpinski and Mary Smigielska in 1885, probably in Warsaw. Josef and  Mary are standing in the center. Josef was a prominent lawyer in Warsaw. He and Mary lived until after 1900.

Josef's first wife, Lucyna Smigielska was Mary's sister; her picture  is at the top center. Josef and Lucyna had five children, Carl,  Ludwik, Henry, Kazmiera, and Mary. Henry is raising the toast in the right rear, and his brothers are the men seated in front of him. The  woman between them is thought to be Kazmiera, while the woman at the back is Marie Engesser, Henry's wife, who was from Alsace. Henry and  Marie's sons are seated on the floor at the right. The other children are thought to belong to Henry's brothers.

Mary had one son, Julian Appel, from her first marriage. He is  standing in the foreground. Julian and the man in the painting at the  right have very similar features, so this might be a painting of  Mary's first husband, or
of Mary and Lucyna's father. The woman above  him is probably Mother Smigielska. That suggests that the painting  at the left is of Josef's mother.

Mary and Josef had three sons and a daughter, but only Stanislaus  lived to adulthood. He would be the young man at the left rear. The three seated women are unknown.

Henry Karpinski emigrated to the USA in 1882 and has many descendants there.

Rodzinna, bezcenna narodowa pamiątka przesłana z USA - fotografia z XIX wieku (rok 1885), z okazji rocznicy 25-lecia ślubu: Józef Bruno Karpiński i Maria Śmigielska, miejsce: prawdopodobnie Warszawa. Józef Karpiński był znanym prawnikiem w Warszawie, pierwszą żoną Jozefa była Lucyna Śmigielska, rodzona siostra Marii, jej postać znajduje się w centrum fotografii. Józef i Lucyna mieli pięcioro dzieci (podajemy w Mianowniku dla wyszukiwarek internetowych): Karol, Ludwik, Henryk, Kazimiera i Maria (niektórzy na tej fotografii), również rodzina Marii z jej pierwszego małżeństwa. Maria i Józef Karpińscy mieli trzech synów i córkę, ale tylko syn Stanisław dożył wieku dojrzałego. Henryk Karpiński, ten na fotografii młody mężczyzna wznoszący toast, wyjechał do USA w 1882 roku (po raz pierwszy?), gdzie dochował się tam wielu potomków.

Ot, symboliczny fragment życia Polaków w XIX wieku, ich historii, ich emigracji, działający na wyobraźnię, mamy nadzieję, że ta pamiątka rodzinna z USA również pomoże w odnalezieniu się rodzin w Polsce, i w połączeniu historii rodzin i rodzinnych korzeni.

Obrazu w rodzinie nie znalismy, bo byc moze powstal juz w USA, no i jest on nieco fantastyczny i mylnie opisany, ale fotografie widzialam w domu zawsze. Mamy ich wiele, bo zachowaly sie albumy fografii mojego pradziadka, Juliana Appela, oraz jego pamietniki i listy do matki i do wuja-ojczyma, Józefa Karpinskiego. Maria Karpinska i pierwsza zona Józefa, Lucyna, de domo Smigielskie, byly siostrami, a po smierci Lucyny, Maria, juz wdowa, poslubila szwagra, aby razem wychowywac wszystkie dzieci).

Nie wiem, czy pan Jim Newman moze byc zainteresowany kontaktem z rodzina w Polsce czy Hiszpanii, albo przynajmniej informacjami, jakimi dysponujemy.
